ABSTRACT

Within buildings and other large-scale environments, ‘You Are Here’ (YAH) maps are often used to provide orientation information, and guide wayfinding. In this chapter our understanding of spatial cognitive processes, informational cues provided by the built environment, and wayfinding behaviour will be related to the design and application of YAH maps. Other issues such as facility type, and user group characteristics and capabilities, are also considered. The YAH map can be the focal point for a wayfinding information system that integrates orientation information from a variety of sources.
