ABSTRACT

Game management is the art of making land produce sustained annual crops of wild game for recreational use (Leopold,  1933). Aldo Leopold made that statement in his book, Game Management, and it is a tting beginning to a chapter on the management history of white-tailed deer. McCabe and McCabe (1997) later stated that wildlife management is the practice of applying biological principles to wildlife systems while keeping in balance with societal conditions and expectations. These statements have fundamental differences in their application to white-tailed deer management. While both philosophies were applied to deer populations of their respective time periods, they achieved varying degrees of success. However, one constant during human habitation of North America with respect to deer management is that humans, either directly through exploitation or indirectly through habitat alteration, have been the all-pervasive inuence on wildlife resources (Peek, 1986).
