ABSTRACT

Upon gross and histological examination the main findings consist of recent thrombosis, occurring within otherwise normal arteries and/or veins and associated ischemic/coagulation necrosis of the parenchyma (Fig. 1 A,B). The latter is characterized by the loss of nuclear detail and dissolution of the cellular components. The amount of necrosis varies according to the extent of the thrombosis and the time elapsed until the pancreatectomy. The peripancreatic fat typically shows extensive enzymatic necrosis due to spillage of pancreatic enzymes from the lysed pancreatic cells.
