ABSTRACT

In th e ir 4 classical” studies Ray and W o lff1 dem onstrated th a t only the large cerebral arteries at the base o f the brain, the meningeal (dural) arteries and the veins were sensitive to noxious stim uli. This directed interest to th e w all o f th e in tra c ra n ia l vessels as a putative source o f headache. The concept was strengthened following the first series o f selective vertebral angiographic studies. The patients com plained o f acute headache following injection o f the contrast m edia, even visual phenom ena, resembling the aura in m igraine, were described .2
