ABSTRACT

Rifaximin (4-deoxy-4′-methylpyrido[1′,2′-1,2]imidazole-[5,4c]-rifamycin SV) is a synthetic antimicrobial and derivative of rifamycin (Jiang and DuPont, 2005; Scarpignato and Pelosini, 2005; Finegold et al., 2009). It was first described as compound L-105 in 1982 and marketed in Italy in 1987 (Huang and DuPont, 2005; Scarpignato and Pelosini, 2005). Its empirical formula is C43H51N3O11 and its molecular weight is 785.9 Da; the chemical structure is shown in Figure 128.1.
