ABSTRACT

Voriconazole (Vfend, UK-109,496) is a synthetic triazole derivative with potent broad-spectrum activity. Voriconazole has the chemical name (2R,3S)-2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)-3-(5-fluoropyrimidin-4-yl)-1-(1,2,4-triazol-1-yl)butan-2-ol with the empirical formula C16H14F3N5O and molecular weight of 349.3. Its structure is similar to fluconazole, but one triazole ring is replaced with a fluorinated pyrimidine and an alpha-methyl group is added to the propanol backbone. The chemical structure is shown in Figure 156.1.
