ABSTRACT

Suramin is a polysulfonated naphthylamine derivative of urea (Voogd et al., 1993; Pepin and Milord, 1994). It was first used for the treatment of sleeping sickness in 1922. It is closely related to the chemical dyes trypan red, trypan blue, and afridol violet. In the early twentieth century, researchers analyzed approximately 2000 compounds for trypanocidal activity and selected these compounds (Voogd et al., 1993).
