ABSTRACT

The second-generation cephalosporins make up the cephamycins (including cefoxitin, cefotetan, and other cephamycins; see Chapter 24) and the true cephalosporins, such as cefuroxime (see Chapter 22), and cefaclor, cefprozil, and loracarbef (see Chapter 21). A variety of other parenterally administered, second-generation true cephalosporins have been developed over the past 30 or more years. These antibiotics are discussed in this chapter. With the exception of cefotiam, which remains popular in Japan and some other countries, these antibiotics are now rarely used. With this in mind, the majority of this chapter will be devoted to cefotiam and, to a lesser extent, cefamandole.
