ABSTRACT

Telavancin (Vibativ, TD-6424; Theravance Inc., San Francisco, CA) is a semisynthetic derivate of vancomycin featuring a lipophilic side chain (decyl-aminoethyl) and a hydrophilic moiety (phosphonomethyl aminomethyl) on the 4′-position of amino acid 7, which is attached to a vancosamine sugar (Leadbetter et al., 2004; Pace and Judice, 2005). The addition of the lipophilic side chain classifies this agent as a lipoglycopeptide similar to oritavancin (see Chapter 46, Oritavancin) and dalbavancin (see Chapter 47, Dalbavancin). The molecular formula is C80H106Cl2N11O27P, and its molecular weight 1755.6; the chemical structure is shown in Figure 48.1.
