ABSTRACT

Amikacin is a semisynthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic. It was derived by the addition of the (S)-4-amino-2-hydroxybutyryl (AHB) side chain into the 1-amino position of the deoxystreptamine moiety of kanamycin A (Kawaguchi, 1976; Pien and Ho, 1981). The empirical formula of amikacin is C22H43N5O13, and the molecular weight is 585.6; the molecular structure of amikacin is shown in Figure 54.1.
