ABSTRACT
Introduction As identified in other chapters, female genital mutilation (FGM) or female circumcision is widely practised, mainly in Africa and the Middle East. It also occurs in the West, mainly among immigrant communities. In Somalia, 98% of women would have undergone some form of FGM, mainly the infibulation type.1,2 See 10, colour plate section for a map of Africa showing Somalia to illustrate the area featured in this chapter.3
