ABSTRACT

The practice of FGM is centuries old, steeped in tradition and ritualistic custom. Reasons given for its continuance are multiple and complex and until about 20 years ago it was performed under a veil of silence and secrecy. In the past, FGM was always seen as a health issue. That is because it was largely the medical fraternity who first saw the problems it caused – and because it was too sensitive: ‘. . . talking just about the health aspects was more acceptable’.
