ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses issues of the primary care approach to mental health in general consultation, in relation to clinical medical history-taking and diagnosis. It is essential that the physician in primary care has appropriate consultation skills for history-taking of mentally ill patients, as well as a good diagnostic approach to mental disorders. A comfortable relaxed environment, possibly the presence of a close friend/relative, and a sympathetic, non-judgemental approach will increase the likelihood of a successful encounter. In the primary care setting, the range of diagnostic possibilities with each patient walking through the door is enormous. The interview should be performed in an open area where the visitor can feel comfortable. Patients should be reassured that their consultation will be private and confidential, and that no other health personnel will interrupt their communication. History-taking for mentally ill patients generally follows the same format as for any patient in primary care.
