ABSTRACT

The demographic of working doctors has changed since the inception of the National Health Service (NHS). Societal changes including the new social model of disability, the role of women and the advancement of a multicultural society have all played their part. Doctors living with a disability are in a unique position to empathise with and respond to the needs of the disabled community as well as generating a diverse and inclusive workforce. Recent legislation is affecting disability within the working environment - in particular, the Disabilities Discrimination Act 19953 and the more recent Equality Act 2010. The current legislation within the Equality Act seeks to actively discourage discrimination and promotes equal opportunities for all doctors within an organisation. Over the last half-century the ethnic origin of doctors working within the United Kingdom has undergone a significant change.
