Q. What are the indications for stent insertion? A. The indications can be divided into two categories – elective and emergency.
Elective indications include the following: • protection of anastomosis (pyeloplasty, ureteric reimplantation) • to overcome extrinsic ureteric compression • prior to chemotherapy to optimise renal function in obstructive uropathy • pre-operatively (in gynaecological or colorectal surgery) to aid identification
of the ureter.
