In recent times, India has been experiencing a phase of rapid growth and economic development reected by industrialization, urbanization, rise in income, and motor vehicle use. A parallel rise in air pollution is evident from the survey conducted by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB, 1997) showing that only 2 out of the 70 cities monitored had clean air (Table 6.1).
