ABSTRACT

It has long been accepted that biological membranes play a critical role in the functioning of all living organisms. ese so´ condensed matter structures envelope the cells and their inner organelles, maintaining relevant concentration gradients by acting as selective lters toward ion and molecule transport. In general, the biological membrane is not only a separator of the cell interior from the surrounding media, but also a “transporter” of material, energy, and information. erefore, the biological membrane represents a powerful ampli er in the signal transduction. Besides their passive role, cell membranes also host a number of metabolic and biosynthetic activities related to their important physiologic functions.
