Pressure gradients at the tunnel face of an Earth Pressure Balance shield

The Botlek Rail Tunnel was the second bored tunnel in The Netherlands and the first that was completed using an EPB shield. A considerable part of the tunnel was bored through Pleistocene sand under a high water table, see Figure 1. The water table was up to 23 m above the tunnel axis. Foam was used to stabilize the tunnel face.
