Quantitative description of the micromechanical behavior of particles in a granular mass subjected to quasistatic deformation has many practical applications. Previous experimental research to quantify micromechanical processes has made important contributions (Roscoe et al. 1963; Wood & Budhu, 1980; Scarpelli & Wood 1982; Oda et al. 1982; Uesugi et al. 1988; and others).
