ABSTRACT

The majority of dust entrainment appears to occur in warm core vortices called dust devils. However the exact physical process by which entrainment occurs is not clear. Suggestions have included saltation impact by sand, pressure gradient and simply that sufficient wind speed (turbulent velocity) is created in such vortices. Generally, though sand transport would also be expected in these cases. Occasionally dust storms occur on a global scale; the origin and nature of these extreme climatic conditions are poorly understood.
