ABSTRACT

This paper intended to investigate particulate segregation mechanisms in a dry granular vibration bed. The significant mechanisms on particulate segregation were also discussed in the paper.

Figure 1 shows the schematic drawing of the performed experimental apparatus. A Techron VTS-100

electromagnetic vibration system was employed as the vertical shaker. The useful frequency of the shaker ranges from 2 to 6,500 Hz with the maximum acceleration 150 g, and the first major resonance of the shaker is at 4,500 Hz. The shaker was vertically driven by sinusoidal signals produced by a function generator through a power amplifier. The vibration frequency f and acceleration a were measured by a Dytran 3136A accelerometer fixed at the shaker and connected to an oscilloscope. The vibration radian frequency ω and amplitude r could be calculated from ω= 2πf and r = a/ω2, respectively. The dimensionless vibration acceleration and the dimensionless vibration velocity Vb were defined as = a/g and Vb = rω/(gd)1/2, respectively, where g is the gravitational acceleration and d is bead diameter.
