ABSTRACT

Following this work, this study aims to explore the grain shape effect of the engineering grains. Based on the image-based modeling method for DEM proposed by Matsushima & Saomoto (2002) and Matsushima (2004), Toyoura sand and Ottawa sand, which are widely-used “standard” sand in geotechnical engineering field, are modeled in 2-D, and a series of simple shear tests are performed with various initial void ratio. In particular, the importance of moment transmission between the particles through the plural contact points is emphasized. Based on this result, a reasonable mechanically-based grain shape parameter is proposed and validated.
