ABSTRACT

A three-dimensional DEM simulation of an axisymmetric compression test has been performed on a dense polydisperse system of 3600 Hertz-Mindlin elastic spheres in a periodic cell, with the mean stress held constant at 100 kPa. The properties of the particles were: Young’s Modulus = 70 GPa, Poisson’s Ratio = 0.3, interparticle friction = 0.5 and sizes ranging from 30 µm to 90 µm. Figures 1-4 show the evolution of deviator stress, void ratio, deviator fabric and coordination number with deviator strain during prepeak deformation. For definitions of the parameters, see Thornton (2000).
