ABSTRACT

The code PFC2D, which models 2D assemblies of disks (of unit thickness), was used in the presented research. The extension to 3D is in due course. Figure 1 shows the DEM models; main geometrical data are provided, as well. The disk diameter results from a compromise choice between the opposite aims of preserving accuracy and saving computing time: the size of the model used for CPT simulations being determined by the geometry of actual calibration chamber and penetrometer, the disk size was determined so that there is a sufficient number of particles in the cone penetration zone. A smaller specimen composed of 2500 particles is large enough to model element tests (statistically uniform conditions).
