ABSTRACT
Our previous study clarified the geometrical and mechanical characteristics of a shear band and the relationship between Coulomb’s and Mohr-Coulomb’s failure criteria, and offered a structural model of a shear band (Fig. 1) (Tokue 1999, Tokue & Shigemura 2003, 2006, 2007, Shigemura & Tokue 2005, 2006). Moreover, we strongly suggested that the boundary planes of a shear band in the ground coincide with the maximum shear stress planes considering the correspondence between the boundary planes of a shear band and the upper and lower planes of a simple shear specimen (Tokue & Shigemura 2003, Shigemura & Tokue 2005).
