ABSTRACT
The helium-neon gas laser was the first gas laser to be developed and the first truly continuous wave (cw) laser of any kind. It is a textbook example of light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation from free atoms, in which population inversion occurs by selective excitation of the upper level through resonant energy transfer.
