ABSTRACT

The first liquid laser was demonstrated in 1966 [1], using a solution of organic dye molecules1 as its gain medium: it was pumped by a ruby laser. There have been research studies, using rare earth ions, such as neodymium, in various solvents, but the emission performance of these lasers has been disappointing [2]. Consequently, the remainder of this chapter will focus on liquid-phase dye laser technology.
