ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the hazard posed by laser radiation, how it is assessed and the principles of how to minimize the risk. The nature of the laser radiation hazard is well known, yet safety standards and guidance documents must continually evolve in response to the challenges of new laser applications and laser source developments; in this chapter the major revisions to the international laser safety standard introduced in 2001 have been included.
