ABSTRACT

Many aquatic organisms depend on dissolved oxygen (DO) for basic life functions. Dissolved oxygen is one of the factors that affect population diversity in surface waters. Aerobic bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and algae all carry out aerobic respiration and require DO to survive. Trout and other coldwater fish species require more DO than warm-water fish species. A DO concentration of 5mgL1 is generally recommended for warm-water fish, and 6mgL1 for coldwater fish.[1]

Lower concentrations may be tolerated for short periods but result in stress on the fish.
