ABSTRACT

The challenges we face owing to the dependence on fossil fuel based economy are enormous and are growing by the day. Today, the world still relies primarily on fossil fuels as its main source of energy. Fossil fuels are expected to account for 77 percent of the increase in demand between 2007 and 2030 (IEA, 2009). The demand for electricity is projected to grow by 76 percent during the same period, requiring a staggering capacity addition of another 4 800 gigawatts (GW), which is almost five times the existing capacity of the United States. The Report also estimates that still 1.3 billion people will lack access to electricity in 2030, compared to the 1.5 billion people today. Universal electricity access could be achieved with additional

with a modest increase in primary energy demand and related CO2 emissions.
