ABSTRACT

Emergency department (ED) medical directors and hospital administrators could benefit from the forecasting of ED service loads so as to allow for improved ED capacity planning. Forecasting can be done to support for strategic, tactical, and operational decision making. Strategic planning has to do with long-term decision making to determine the physical size and capability of a facility. Tactical planning is for intermediate-term decision making to set staffing and resource levels and determine expected budgets. Operational planning is for short-term decision making for scheduling employees and real-time adjustment to their schedule.
