ABSTRACT
Hospital-based emergency departments accommodate over 119 million patient visits annually,1 and physicians and other clinicians working there save countless lives. Emergency departments (EDs) have resources and services that are not available anywhere else. For people suffering from acute injury or illness, they are an indispensable part of the health care delivery system.
