ABSTRACT

Pastoralism is one of the most sustainable ways that humans use savannas (Fritz et al., 2003; Hansen et al., 2005), if livestock are managed sustainably. Pastoralism is an economic activity suitable to savannas where, generally, crop farming is not possible or is highly uncertain. In savannas, herders keep cattle in sub-Saharan Africa, North America, South America, and Australia; sheep in the eastern Mediterranean; camels in North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula; and horses along with multiple stock from North Africa east across Asia (Sutton and Anderson, 2004). In the savannas of South America, such as pampas (Argentina) or the cerrado (Brazil), ranchers raise cattle (Wilcox, 1999).
