ABSTRACT
This led on the one hand to the domestication of water, but on the other hand, to its mystification, which resulted in a certain ambivalence between understanding the phenomenon of water and mastering hydraulics. Nonetheless, water “worked” during the Middle Ages because great strides were made in the development of river and maritime navigation.
