ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: In this paper an alternative approach for the dynamic response optimization of wind excited tall buildings is proposed. Instead of optimizing the structure in terms of the response time histories, it is proposed to optimize under probabilistic constraints defined by the second order statistics of the response. Each constraint is formulated considering the mean hourly wind speed that causes a peak response level with specified mean recurrence interval. This mean hourly wind speed is calculated in terms of the response through a directional vulnerability model that rigorously accounts for the directional aerodynamics and climatological information. Finally the proposed method is illustrated on a full size 2D frame analyzed in a fully 3D extreme wind climate.
