ABSTRACT

Arsenic (As) is of increasing concern due to its potential carcinogenic properties. In 2000, the world cumulative industrial-age anthropogenic As production was 4.53 million tones (Han et al., 2003). On one hand, sediments are the main sink for anthropogenic As. On the other hand, As in sediments can be released back into overlying water when environmental conditions change (sediment pH and redox potential), acting as a source of pollutants.
