1.2 Geology Background
Saint Martin-la-Porte exists in the external zones of the Western Alps in the SubBrianconnais domain. The geologic characteristics are primarily developed since Eocene times, where two major thrusting events and lithospheric flexure have influenced the region. It is typical in both thrusting events to see clear preservation of basement topography as illustrated by Fry (1989). Consequently, these structures are quite clear, as external massifs are superposed on older nappes according to Ramsay (1989).
