ABSTRACT

Singh (1973) presents continuum characterization methods for jointed rock masses and expressions were presented to estimate the elastic moduli of the equivalent continuum anisotropic rock mass. Zienkiewicz (1977) et al. used the equivalent continuum approach, referred to as a multi-laminate model to simulate a discontinuous rock mass. Gerrard (1982) has also used an equivalent continuum approach by expressing the compliance of an element as the sum of the compliances of the intact rock and that of the individual joint sets. Fossum (1985) has developed relations for estimating the effective elastic properties for a randomly jointed rock mass. Duncan and Goodman (1968) have described a jointed rock mass as an equivalent anisotropic continuum.
