ABSTRACT

Acoustic Emission (AE) is generally defined as the high-frequency transient elastic waves originating from the sudden release of energy at localized points within a loaded material. AE has been extensively utilized over the past decades to quantify microstuctural damage of rock both in laboratory and field studies. Knill et al. (1967) and Hardy (1972) presented a comprehensive review of the early applications of AE in rock mechanics. Lockner (1993) discusses the successes and limitations ofAE studies within the context of predicting rock failure. Manthei & Eisenblätter (2008) review applications of AE in mine monitoring.
