Limit analysis provides a powerful means of assessing the stability of a broad range of geotechnical engineering problems. One benefit of the method is that the bound theorems of plasticity theory can be used to ensure that solutions have definite status, i.e. that the solution obtained provides either an overor under-estimate of the true collapse load, or ‘load factor’.
