ABSTRACT
The magnitude of the rock pressure is affected by the shape, width and height of the tunnel opening and the excavation scheme. Amongst the most important factors influencing the effective stress state on a tunnel lining are the rock strength and the initial stress state. Other decisive effects are the geological stratification (see Kastner 1962) and the groundwater conditions including the groundwater flow (percolation water) in case of drained tunneling conditions.
