ABSTRACT

The authors have found that uniform nodal arrangements can give unsatisfactory results. The errors seen can be explained with reference to the manner in which the nodal supports combine. Points near the domain boundaries will have fewer nodes in support than points in the centre of the domain, and consequently the approximation in the centre will be richer than that near the boundaries. This mismatch then leads to errors in stress updates at the boundaries which accumulate until the problem cannot converge.
