ABSTRACT

Several types of groyne have been used for the stabilization of banks, creating a navigation channel by confining the cross-sectional area and improving habitat of flora and fauna. The present study focuses on the effects of groyne shapes on the instantaneous-coherent flow and mean flow structures around I-type, T and L-type groynes. Experiments were conducted with the three types of groyne model by means of flow visualization technique and Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV). Experimental results show that the distribution of large shear layer and coherent vortices changes greatly with the groyne type.
