ABSTRACT

A modified method to predict the suspended sediment concentration and transport rate in open channels was developed based on the Rouse Equation and power law velocity profiles by using some optimized parameters. The method proposes a linear regression relationship between an assumed turbulent parameter and the product of water depth and shear velocity to determine the ratio of sediment transfer coefficient to momentum transfer coefficient, i.e. β-factor. It is applicable to a wide range of water depths, from lab flumes to rivers. The sediment concentration profiles predicted by the proposed method agree well with measured data when compared with other formulas developed for certain areas. Fine suspended load transport rate may be estimated effectively.
