ABSTRACT

Revised records from the Environment Agency database (EA Technical Report P346), which collated more than one hundred different dye tracing studies of rivers throughout the United Kingdom, were used to investigate trends of optimized velocity and dispersion coefficients from the Advection Dispersion Equation (ADE) model. Verification of selected fields and records from the database was completed. A series of empirical regression analysis were performed by means of a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation technique. The assessment included the use of channel and watershed variables such as slope, relative drainage area, relative discharge, and a new approach by including a planform parameter such as river sinuosity. The relative drainage area and the relative discharge variables provided the most statistical impact over the considered parameters. The addition of the reach sinuosity variable had not a substantial statistical influence over the results obtained. Three empirical equations for flow velocity are presented in this paper.
