ABSTRACT

In this paper, the authors applied a depth averaged two-dimensional numerical model to simulate the water level induced by tides in the Southampton Water. The model is based on Finite-Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM) and has been applied to reproduce tide-induced water elevations in the Southampton Water. The ‘double high water’ generated during flood tide is accurately predicted by numerical model applied here. In general, the numerically simulated water levels agree well with the available field observations. Relatively large discrepancy between the simulation and field measurements for ebb tide exists and the model overestimates the water level at an observation station. This difference may be ascribed to the fact that the bottom shear stress formulation does not account for the effect of the bed material and topography.
