ABSTRACT

Designing harbor works should not be considered as a purely technical problem. It is also a problem of environmental sensitivity, as well as a social one. Now that the design of low and non overtopped harbor breakwaters is in strong demand, Laboratory of Harbor Works (LHW) of National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) has proposed environmental design rules. Forming a berm in front of a conventional low crested breakwater, the wave overtopping is strongly decreasing. A basic experimental investigation of the effect of the berm width as well as the berm height and slope to the wave overtopping rate is now conducting in LHW.
