ABSTRACT

Figure 2 shows a schematic diagram of the model pipe pile under testing. The aluminium pile has a length of 1200 mm, outer diameter of 25 mm and wall thickness of 1.6 mm. The pile was

1 INTRODUCTION

A wealth of studies on piles subjected to lateral soil movements were conducted using physical modelling, notably geotechnical centrifuge modelling (Stewart et al. 1994, Bransby & Springman 1997, Leung 2006), 1 g small scale model tests (Poulos et al. 1995; White et al. 2008; Guo & Qin 2010). Simple analytical methods and guidelines have been established from these studies to evaluate the response of piles undergoing lateral soil movement. In particular, Guo & Qin (2010) present simple solutions for piles in moving sand from the results of 14 typical 1 g model pile tests. These solutions have been further checked using full-scale field and centrifuge tests data (Guo 2009).
