In-flight investigation of excavation effects on smooth single piles

This paper describes and reports two centrifuge model tests in dry Toyoura sand to investigate the effects of excavation on the behaviour of smooth single piles. Pile loading tests were conducted both on the ground surface prior to an excavation and at the formation level after the completion of an in-flight basement excavation. Comparison of the test results is reported and discussed.
