2 DESCRIPTION OF SMALL SCALE MODEL TESTS

2.1 Test set up and experimental procedure

The mechanical behavior of a laterally loaded pile in dry, cohesionless soil under static and cyclic loading was investigated using 1 g small-scale modeling. Model piles were embedded at varying depths into a dry, granular soil material made of medium sand in a cylindrical steel container. The cylindrical container was 600 mm in diameter and has a depth of up to 780 mm. A double plastic lining was fitted inside the walls of the container to minimize friction between the sand and the container.
